Unitised Cargo – 8: PLA Half Pallet

supath seo unitised cargo

Introduction To Unitised Cargo

Limitation in space calls for optimisation of freight through thorough organisation. However, since the shape of the freight room plays a major role,  unit load devices have a category called contour ULDs.  Unitised cargo means freight organised into specially manufactured containers or pallets, which may be with or without contours and are made  for main deck and/or lower deck loading.

Unitised cargo is extensively used by freight forwarders to consolidate freight. A large amount of freight destined for a single destination can be flown as one consolidation under one master air way bill. To keep all the consignments together, they can be loaded into a container or a pallet. When it comes to very heavy freight not too big in width a PLA half pallet can be used.

The Pallet Category

The PLA  is a heavy-duty half pallet, which can be loaded into both the decks. It is manufactured to withstand heavy loads and goes by the commonly used name of PLA or 60.4 inch pallet.Main deck contour loading is possible with this ULD. As is the case with PMC pallets, PLAs are also covered by a net after the loading is complete. Being a pallet, this ULD has no surrounding walls and the freight is secured to the tide-down-slots on the floor. The tie-down-slots are provided along the perimeter of the pallet, so that the net that goes over the freight load can be easily secured.Special PLWs with extra strong floor systems are available. Such PLAs are used for carrying heavy freight.

Advice To Exporters

  • Strong and sturdy packaging is a must. Freight will be stacked, so your freight must be able to withstand the load
  • A waterproof lining is always a good idea.
  • Air freight regulations are strict. All openings or slits in the packaging is to be sealed. Else your freight will be classified as “vulnerable to manipulation”. That might mean extra charges for you.
  • Avoid overhangs on pallets. Limit the freight to the size of the pallet.
  • Freight forwarder or the airline will decide the device to be used.
  • Since freight loaded on unit load devices will be stacked, you should inform the freight forwarder in your SLI (Shipper’s Letter of Instructions) if your freight may not be stacked!
  • Freight handling is fast. To avoid your non-stackable freight from being stacked, you should use a “DO NOT STACK”  triangular prop on the top of your freight.

Unitised Cargo – 7: PMC 10 Ft Pallet

supath seo unitised cargo

Introduction To Unitised Cargo

Unitised Cargo not only optimises planning of freight space on aircraft but also organises the distribution of freight in the cabin, so that the maximum amount of freight can be loaded into the plane, but within the weight limits.  Air freight, today, is unthinkable without unit load devices and all airlines make use of this light weight equipment to organise and transport freight.

Two Categories

Unit Load Devices (ULD) come in two major categories:

  • Containers (also known as cans or pods)
  • Pallets

Containers, with or without contours, are, as the name suggests, closed devices with or without doors. The entrance is closed or secured by lockable doors, when used for valuable freight. When used for loading standard general cargo usually synthetic textile screens are used.

Pallets, on the other hand are flat devices with tie-down slots along the outer edges. Just as the containers, pallets are made from Aluminium and the inner area accommodates the freight while the outer edges serve to secure the freight. Slots are provided for the hooks to slide in and protect the load.

PMC 10 Ft Pallet ( 96 Inches Pallet)

PMCs are one of the most common, if not the most common, ULD used in unitised cargo loading, It is a very simple flat device with a narrow tie-down-slot array along the outer edges for attaching the straps or nets that secure the freight. Unlike the containers, where palletised freight might prove to have a disadvantage, PMC can be used for palletised freight, as there are no walls.

  • IATA Certification : PMC
  • FAA Certification : TSO-C90
  • Outer Dimension : 318 cm x 244 cm
  • Usable Area : 304 cm x 230 cm
  • Maximum Permissible Gross Weight: 6804 Kg
  • Aircraft : Airbus: A300 category (A330, A340, A380), Boeing: B747, B767, B777, MD: MD-11, DC : DC8 and DC10

Advice To Exporters

  • Please use strong packaging.
  • Waterproofing is not necessary, as a waterproof plastic sheet is spread on the pallet before loading. However extra protection is never a mistake
  • If your consignments consist of several pieces, organise them on pallets with flat base strips. This will help the even distribution of weight. Pallets with chock (= feet) have a disadvantage. The weight of the freight is concentrated on a very small area, which can lead to violating the floor load tolerance levels (the amount of weight concentrated on a small area of the pallet.)
  • Packages must be secure (air freight security regulations). No slits, openings or cracks  are permitted (freight runs the risk of manipulation)
  • Avoid overhangs on pallets. The freight should occupy only the inner area of the packaging pallet used.
  • Freight forwarder or the airline will decide the device to be used.

Unitised Cargo – 6: AMJ 10 Ft

supath seo unitised cargo

Introduction To Unitised Cargo

Just as in the last article, this one, too, will deal with  unit load devices that have been developed for loading on the aircraft main deck. These containers or devices cannot be loaded into the belly area because of the size and like most of the lower deck containers, they have contours.  Aluminium is the material used in the manufacture, although new materials are being tested. AMJ 10 Ft container is a main deck loading device and is used on wide body aircraft ( MD-11, B747, B777). A tall and wide contoured container AMJ can be used for loading long and high freight. There are no doors and screens secured at the borders keep the contents safe.

Main Deck Construction

The article about AMH 10 Ft showed the construction of the main deck floor, especially the ball mat area. For easy reference the same images are being added here. The containers are guided along the prepared area to finally be arrested to their final position.  They locked in position to prevent any form of movement during taxiing, take off or landing procedures.

Shippers should, however, remember that although the containers are professionally loaded, the top of the freight  will always register a higher moment (laws of physics). Hence, the contents are to be packaged to prevent any free movement.

Air Cargo Size And Packaging

Questions have been asked about when a freighter may be needed. As a rule of thumb consider any freight over 160 cm in height to be main deck freight. On wide body aircraft (airbus 300, or B747, B767, B777, MD11 etc.) , any freight above 160 cm will be considered as main deck category. Hence, to give you more flight possibilities, it is always better to limit your freight to a height of maximum 160 cm.

A freight of 300 cm may be considered oversize (Any freight over 400 cm is oversize) but the width and the height matter. Hence, always consult your freight forwarder, who can advise you about the possibilities. Although freight is flown in containers; in this article here, in AMJ 10 Ft; no cargo that is not packaged will be accepted.

Since containers are made of aluminium, consignments should not have sharp edges. Unit Load Devices that show a certain amount of damage are not permitted to be used in air freight

AMH 10 Ft Container (Main Deck Loding Only)

  • IATA Specification : AMJ 10 Ft contour container
  • Maximum Load Volume : approx. 16.5 cbm (cubic meters)
  • Maximum Weight Tolerance (tie-down slots):907 Kg
  • Maximum Payload : 6804 Kg
  • Inner Dimension : Length 306 cm x Width 230 cm x Height 240 cm
  • Aircraft : (wide body) MD-11F, B747F, B777F

Advice To Exporters

  • Strong and wear resistant packaging. Protection against manipulation is mandatory for all air cargo
  • Please use card board pallets to organise your freight. Wooden pallets increase weight!
  • Make sure that there is no overhang on pallets. This will avoid increasing the used volume.
  • Inner packaging to be secured tightly  and  all openings  to be sealed. Please inform the freight forwarder about any special handling requirements (remember to affix the required labels such as FRAGILE, DO NOT THROW etc. If the consignment is valuable cargo, your freight forwarder will inform you of any special packaging needs.
  • It is the freight forwarder’s decision whether to use a container or not.
  • Optimising the cargo will be done either by the airline or by the freight forwarder. Various factors will determine the decision-making. Unitised Cargo is a point to be thought of, when you have a lot of freight packaged in cartons and especially when you have regular shipments.
  • The details given here are only to give you an idea of unitised cargo. You must consult your air cargo agent to find the best possible solution

A unit load device (ULD) is a pallet or container used to load luggage, freight, and mail on wide-body aircraft and specific narrow-body aircraft.

Unitised Cargo – 5 AMH 10 Ft

supath seo unitised cargo

Introduction To Unitised Cargo

Since an aircraft is divided into two major sections called lower and main deck respectively, unit load devices have been developed for both the decks. Since the last few articles discussed the lower deck containers, the coming articles will discuss the main deck unitised cargo variety. The current article will consider the AMH 10 Ft container, which is restricted to main flight deck.

Main Deck On Freighter Aircraft

Air freight is required to move fast and for this all operations around freight handling must be fine tuned for speed. Perfectly time operations procedures and equipment are mandatory for the smooth functioning of freight movement in the airline world. Air freight containers and pallets give the organisational framework for the freight space logic, loading equipment provide the transition from warehouse dollies to the apron and the final movement of the organised freight into the aircraft. The flooring of the aircraft is constructed to help the equipment to slide into pre-determined position. Slots and tie-down points help fasten the containers to the floor to keep them from moving while taxiing, take off, flight manoeuvres  and while landing.

AMH 10 Ft Container (restricted to main deck)

  • IATA Specification : AMH 10 Ft contour container
  • Maximum Load Volume : approx. 16.5 cbm (cubic meters)
  • Maximum Weight Tolerance (tie-down slots):907 Kg
  • Maximum hanging load : 2500 Kg
  • Inner Dimension : Length 306 cm x Width 230 cm x Height 240 cm
  • Maximum Permissible Payload: 6804 Kg
  • Aircraft : (wide body) MD-11F, B747F, B777F

Advice To Exporters

  • Packaging should be strong and secure. Protection against manipulation should be provided. This applies to all air freight consignments
  • If you have a lot of cargo, try using card board pallets to organise your freight (unless the weight of the consignment is too heavy)
  • No overhang on pallets. This will reduce the volume available by taking up more room
  • Inner packaging to be packaged tight (no wobbling of contents). Joints and slits to be sealed. Please inform the freight forwarder about any special handling requirements. If the consignment is valuable cargo, packaging should be able to withstand any kind of handling
  • Please note: the freight forwarder will decide whether to use a container or not! Leave the decision to the air cargo agent to take this decision
  • Freight forwarder will organise the freight in the best possible way. If the freight forwarder does not containerise the cargo, the airline will.
  • The details given here are only for your general information

A Word Of Caution On Main Deck Load

This section does not concern the AMH container. Please do not compare the main deck loading possibility of B777 to that of B747. Although B777 is more modern in comparison to B747, there is a structural difference to the contour of the aircraft inside!! Please let the freight forwarder and the loadmaster decide. The loadmaster can advise you about dismantling your large freight .

Unitised Cargo – 4 AVA LD3 Val

supath seo unitised cargo

Introduction

The last article on unitised cargo was about the AKW LD3-45 . Commercial cargo and passenger luggage are transported using containers and pallets, as these ULDs (Unit Load Devices) provide a very good method of organising freight in modules designed for loading into aircraft. The staff involved in organising the movement of cargo at airport has only a limited time on their hands making time management a very high priority factor in their routine work. Unitised cargo gives them the possibility to manage that time, thereby helping the tight time schedules to be maintained well.

AVA LD3 Val Container

Just as the AKW LD3-45 the AVA LD3 can be used for transporting valuable cargo and possibility for locking the container is provided. AVA LD3 is also a contour container, which means that its construction on side corresponds to the contour of the aircraft. While AKW is used for narrow body aircraft the AVA is used in wide body planes and has slightly different dimensions. AVA containers are constructed to transport garments. This is the major difference when compared to the AKE container. AVA can be loaded into Airbus, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas aircraft (wide body)

AVA LD3 Val Container

  • Suitable for : cargo in cartons and garments. Palletised cargo is to be avoided. Valuable cargo : container can be locked
  • Standard name : AVA LD3 . The term Valuable is added, and the container can be locked and secured, which is a mandatory condition.
  • Synonyms : Pod, can
  • IATA Specification : AVA LD3 contour container
  • Door Size : Width  150 cm x Height  141 cm
  • Maximum Load Volume : approx. 4.3 cbm (cubic meters)
  • Maximum Weight Tolerance (tie-down slots):907 Kg
  • Inner Dimension : Length 146 cm x Width 144 cm x Height 160 cm
  • Maximum Permissible Payload: 1588 Kg
  • Aircraft : (wide body) Airbus: A330, A340 and A380 . McDonnell Douglas : MD 11 freighter . Boeing: B747, 767 and B777 (bother passenger and freighter)

Advice To Exporters

  • Packaging should be secure. Protection against manipulation should be provided (seal any opening)
  • If pallets are needed, please use, hard board pallets. Secure using straps (cross strapping). Straps should prevent cargo from moving on the pallets.
  • No overhang on pallets
  • Inner packaging to be packaged tight (no wobbling of contents). Joints and slits to be sealed. Please inform the freight forwarder about any special handling requirements. If the consignment is valuable cargo, packaging should be able to withstand any kind of handling
  • Insurance cover: A freight forwarder has to be given written instruction to provide your freight with insurance cover. Instruction on telephone alone will not suffice. A copy of the letter is to be filed. Do not forget to include your request for insurance on the SLI (Shipper’s Letter of Instructions). If freight is to return to the exporting country, please manage your customs papers! Your freight forwarder will inform you about actions to be taken.
  • Freight forwarder will need to know the value of the consignment (valuable content)
  • Certain valuable cargo will be picked up and transported using dedicated vehicles.

Unitised Cargo – 3 AKW LD3-45 Val

supath seo unitised cargo

Introduction

Unitised cargo is used not only for general consolidation but also for specialised goods. In daily transport of commercial cargo, industrial goods and passenger luggage are carried in containers, as these ULDs (Unit Load Devices) provide an optimised method of organising freight in modules designed for usage in aircraft. Time management is a critical factor in the airline business and optimising handling, loading, reporting  etc is unavoidable. Unitised cargo is here to stay and is an invaluable help for all the airlines.

AKW LD3-45 Valuable Cargo Container

AKW LD3-45 Valuable Cargo Container is the same as the one described in Unitised Cargo -2 . The difference here is the modification done to the container to carry cargo having a very high value. In the codes used by airline such cargo is denoted by the term VAL

Such valuable cargo has to be transported in a highly secure way. Safety measures are given high priority for valuable cargo. At times, the consignment has to be insured at a high rate. The freight forwarder needs to take special precautions during transporting to the airline. The air way bill (AWB) has to show the cargo is valuable.

Cargo classified as VAL will be transported in an LD3 class, AKH container. The specifications are the same as that of the AKE-LD3 45

AKW LD3-45 Container (Air Freight Container)

  • Suitable for : cargo in cartons. Palletised cargo is not recommended. Valuable cargo will usually be secured with red sealing wax
  • Standard name : AKW LD3-45 . The term Valuable is added and the container can be locked and secured.
  • Synonyms : Pod, can
  • IATA Specification : Full width (AKE LD3-Lightweight is half width), double contoured (both sides with contour), narrow body  A320 family
  • Door Size : Width  142 cm x Height  103 cm
  • Maximum Load Volume : approx. 3.6 cbm (cubic meters)
  • Maximum Weight Tolerance (tie-down slots):907 Kg
  • Inner Dimension : Length 146 cm x Width 144 cm x Height 111 cm
  • Maximum Permissible Payload: 1134 Kg

Unitised Cargo – 2 AKH LD3-45

supath seo unitised cargo

Why Unitised Cargo

Although over the years aircraft design has improved, there are still space limitations that demand optimising freight space. There is a very limited amount of non-stretchable space on aircraft which calls for optimised plans for freight. Not every exporter is well-trained in preparing goods for air freight. The result is goods packaged in vulnerable materials, thus making both the packaging and the content prone to damage. Reused cartons can prove to be too weak to hold the contents in place, leading to spillage and resulting extra work for which there very lass time set aside in cargo planning.

Not all flights fly directly to the destination, thus making a landing at a transit airport to either refuel or to let the passengers to continue their journey on a connecting flight. This means the luggage need to be transferred within a short time frame without sending them on the wrong route.  Additionally, commercial freight travelling as belly freight has to be transferred, too. The limited time available to the staff, the large number of luggage and the amount of freight all need to be streamlined to cause as less delay as possible for the smooth functioning of flight schedules.

This is where unitised cargo proves its efficiency. Freight is not simply loaded on to an aircraft, but planned and arranged in s systematic way, which takes in safety of the freight and the flight, maximisation of the freight space and make freight transfer from cargo hold to the freight terminal or from aircraft to aircraft as smooth as possible

Short Haul Flights – Narrow Body Aircraft

The AKH LD3-45 air freight container is used in narrow body aircraft. Standard use is in Airbus short-haul planes A319, A320 and A321. Without going to technical details, we can have a look at the Airbus 320, which is commonly used in short-haul flight.

Unitised Cargo – 1 AKE LD3 Lightweight

supath seo unitised cargo

Prologue: For Whom Is This Article

Just as all the articles on this site, this article, too, is for the public and especially for companies that export large amount of small to medium amount freight. The article intends to give an idea of possibilities for transporting freight by flight in the most cost-effective way. If, as an exporter, you ship a large amount cartons or small pallets (American English: skids), this article will prove useful to you. Unnecessary text will be omitted to keep the practical usability of the article.

Introduction To Unitised Air Cargo Consolidation

Unitised Air Cargo is cargo management by using Unit Load Devices (ULD)  done either by the freight forwarder or by the airline. Freight is loaded into specially made containers built to fit into aircraft.  ULDs are also specific to aircraft and hence not all ULDs fit into every plane.  ULD Consolidation not only saves space but also reduces air freight costs.

Organising Freight Space

Although aircrafts are large, there is only limited room for freight and the shape of the fuselage brings in more limitation. Unitised cargo help to organise the pieces to an optimum. Freight forwarders handling a large amount of freight tend to use ULDs to manage not only the freight but also the cost. Since the competition is stiff, one has to optimise as much as one can to help bring down the cost and ULDs help in achieving both the goals in the best way

Flight Decks : LD And MD

The aircraft is divided into two main sections, the upper deck is called the main deck (or MD) and the second is lower deck (LD). On a passenger aircraft (freight forwarder or airline jargon is “PAX”), the passenger cabin is the main deck and the lower deck (also called belly) carries the luggage and freight.

AKE LD3 Lightweight Container

  • Suitable for : cargo in cartons. Palletised cargo will soon reduce the capacity as pallets are heavy.
  • Standard name : AKE LD3 Lightweight Container
  • Synonyms: Pod, can
  • IATA Specification : contoured, half-width
  • Door size :  Width 142 cm x Height 103 cm
  • Maximum Load volume : 3.6 cbm (cubic meters)
  • Maximum Weight Tolerance of the tie-down slots 907 Kg
  • Inner Dimension :  (Length x Width x Height) 146 cm  x 144 cm x 160 cm
  • Maximum Permissible Gross Weight (Payload) : 1588 Kg
  • Aircraft : Airbus (A330, A340, A380)  Boeing (B777, B747, B767), McDonnell Douglas (MD11)

Advice to Exporters

  • If you need to use pallets for transport a cargo of multiple cartons, please use cardboard pallets, as they are lightweight. Please avoid overhang (cartons extending beyond the contour of the pallets)
  • Use strong straps to bind the cartons to the pallet s (cross strapping) to prevent cartons from slipping of the pallet when the aircraft flies into a turbulence.( the base will remain stable, but the momentum on the top will be more)
  • Unitised cargo management optimises air freight. Packaging goods in cartons help airlines in managing the ever-growing amount of freight.
